Some years ago the Federal and State Governments put in place two initiatives to both promote the building industry and increase the level of home ownership.

The two schemes are:
  • The First Home Owners Grant Scheme (FHOGS). Persons who qualify under this scheme are entitled to a one-off grant of $7,000.00 to assist in purchasing their first home. On 14th October 2008 The Prime Minister announced an increase in the amount granted under this scheme by way of the First Home Owners Boost Scheme (FHOBS). Persons who qualify under FHOBS are now entitled to a one-off grant of $14,000.00, increasing to $21,000.00 when purchasing a new home or newly constructed home. This grant will apply to contracts made between 14 October 2008 and 30 June 2009. Finally State Government will grant an extra $3,000.00 to first home purchasers (this is in addition to the grants referred to above) for all contracts made between 11 November 2008 and 10 November 2009.
  • The First Home Plus Scheme (FHPLUS). Persons who qualify under this scheme are entitled to have the stamp duty on their first home purchase waived.

Both schemes are administered through the NSW Office of State Revenue (OSR).

Conditions apply for eligibility for both of these schemes.
